Finding the Perfect Family Hotel in San Diego

When traveling with our family of six (two adults and four kids), finding the right hotel can be a challenge. We need space to spread out, good food options, and a location that puts us close to all the fun. Our recent stay at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown checked all these boxes and more!

Spacious Suites That Actually Fit Everyone

The best part about Embassy Suites? They actually understand what families need! Our suite had a separate bedroom for Mom and Dad and a living room area with a pullout sofa and plenty of space for the kids. Having two rooms meant we could put the little ones to bed and still have grown-up time without whispering in the dark. The rooms were super clean and comfy too!

Free Breakfast = Happy Family

Let me tell you about breakfast - it's not just cereal and muffins! Every morning, we enjoyed a full, cooked-to-order breakfast included in our stay. The kids went crazy for the made-to-order omelets and fresh pancakes, while I appreciated the coffee bar. Some mornings they even had French toast! With four hungry kids, having breakfast included saved us at least $50-60 each day.

Evening Reception: A Parent's Dream

After a long day of sightseeing, we loved coming back for the evening reception. The adults enjoyed complimentary drinks while the kids munched on snacks (and unlimited Shirley Temples with extra cherries). This little break gave us time to plan our evening while the kids recharged. It's these little extras that make Embassy Suites such a great value for families.

Perfect Downtown Location

The hotel sits right on Pacific Highway with the beautiful San Diego Bay just across the street.

We could walk to:

Having so many attractions within walking distance meant we didn't need to load everyone into the car multiple times a day!

Pool Time Is Any Time

The indoor pool was a huge hit with our crew! It stays open late, which was perfect for evening swims after our daily adventures. The best part? It's right by the elevator, making it super easy to get back to our room with wet, tired kids.

Family-Friendly Dining Options

The NY West restaurant in the hotel serves kid-friendly pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches that satisfied even our pickiest eater. We also loved having a mini-fridge and microwave in our suite for snacks and leftovers.

For dinners, we had tons of choices with all the downtown restaurants just steps away. But honestly, some nights we were so tired from adventures that we just ordered pizza to the room and called it a win!

Worth Knowing

  • Parking is valet at $65 per night ($80 for large SUV's) (a bit pricey, but that's downtown San Diego)

  • The fitness center offers Stretch U classes if you need to work out vacation treats

  • Football games are shown in the restaurant during season

  • The elevators can get busy during peak breakfast hours

  • This hotel is pet friendly

Final Thoughts

For a family of six, finding accommodations that don't require booking two rooms is a huge money-saver. The Embassy Suites truly delivered with their spacious suites, included meals, and perfect location. The value we got from the free breakfast alone made this stay worth every penny!
